Roger Slugg KUNR 88.7 FM Saturdays 3pm - 5pm
The blues came to roger early. As the last baby born on December 31st, the next baby born got all the goodies. After that it was all uphill. After a career in the military which lasted 3 years, 9 months, and 28 days, he spent several years in the student ghettos of Baltimore, Columbus, and Albuquerque. When his wife announced she was leaving, he moved to Reno and partook of all the great things that make this a destination resort. Several anonymous meetings later, while listening to rock music, he wondered where all that great music had it's roots. Thus happened his personal discovery of the blues.
About this same time KUNR-FM was looking for volunteers. After answering phones during pledge drive, and learning how to run the board, he became a part-time host of 'The Blues Show' hosted by Willie Albright. Gradually building up host time, he took over the show in 1995 when Willie moved on. Then, in April 1996, 'The Blues Show' was taken off the air. Roger didn't know it at the time but this had been decided before he took over the show. Despondent over this loss he began to watch "Beavis and Butthead", believing it to be a documentary. When his twin brother from different mothers Tomcat Lewis asked him to co-host his jazz show Roger agreed, and when Tomcat moved to Portland Roger took over the show, renaming it "third bop from the sun", and featuring blues artists once a month. In 2001, when new KUNR management asked Roger if he would like to host a new blues show, he mulled it over for 3/5 of a nanosecond and replied yes. Thus was born "Take Names Later Blues".
This show is a community effort to bring the best in blues to the airwaves. People are constantly sharing their music to get artists on the air that have been underrepresented. Local bands share their latest cd's to let people know how they are progressing. Blues fans stop by the station to share their latest concert news or music acquisition. And the Reno Blues Society shares their music, answers phones during pledge drives, and brings great artists to town so that I have a good excuse to play lots and lots of their music. It is a partnership with a goal of "keepin' the blues alive". |

Mick Martin KXJZ 90.5 FM Reno/90.9 FM Sacramento Saturdays 1pm - 5pm Mick Martin has been producing and hosting the blues for 12 years, beginning with The KZAP Blues Show in August of 1989. He joined the staff of KXJZ in July 1991 to create Mick Martin's Blues Party, which he calls "a combination blues specialty show and a tribute to the freeform, underground radio concept." This means you'll be hearing everything from B.B. King and Robert Johnson to the Grateful Dead and Stevie Ray Vaughan every Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. -- with no repeats. "I want to give people the equivalent of a four-hour album of music every week, mixing the classics with the new and different."
Mick is also a musician, having played professionally since 1968 and, since 1986, leading "Mick Martin and the Blues Rockers." On March 31, 1994, Mick did something highly unusual for a harmonica player: he performed at Carnegie Hall for the nationally broadcast Blues in Jazz concert with mentor Jimmy Smith, Jimmy Witherspoon, Grover Washington Jr., Carrie Smith and Mark Whitfield. That same year, he was featured on Jimmy Smith's Fantasy/Milestone Records release, Sum Serious Blues. Mick has played harmonica on stage behind Freddie King, Jimmy Rogers, Bo Diddley, Mick Taylor, the Yardbirds, Roy Brown and many others. His latest CD with the Blues Rockers, Tip of the Hat, was released nationally last September by Dig Music. He is also a featured artist on the same label's Bob Dylan tribute, Positively 12th & K, which also features Sal Valentino and Jackie Greene. Mick is the creator and co-author (with Marsha Porter) of the DVD & Video Guide, published annually by Ballantine Books. The 2004 edition hits bookstores throughout the world in late August.
